Islamabad: The invitation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who said Pakistan would continue to engage constructively in global peace initiatives. The spokesperson reiterated Islamabad’s position that any lasting resolution to the Palestine issue must be in line with United Nations resolutions. Pakistan does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.

The move comes ahead of a likely meeting between Sharif and Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, which begins next week in Davos. Trump is scheduled to arrive in Davos on Tuesday, while Sharif is expected to travel to Zurich on Monday with a large delegation that includes federal cabinet ministers.

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir, is also likely to accompany the prime minister. According to security sources, Munir has planned a series of strategic and security engagements in Munich and other European cities, though the dates have yet to be finalised.

Sources within the Prime Minister’s Office added that Sharif may make an overnight stop in London on his return journey for private engagements.
