UN set for crucial vote on US-led Gaza peace plan as global powers signal support

The United Nations Security Council is preparing for a pivotal vote next Monday on a US-drafted resolution backing President Donald Trump’s proposed peace roadmap for Gaza.

NEW YORK : According to diplomats, the draft resolution, revised multiple times in recent weeks, seeks to establish a transitional “peace council” for Gaza with a mandate lasting until December 2027.

The council would serve as an interim governing body and, under the proposal, would theoretically be headed by President Trump. The plan also calls for the deployment of a “temporary international stabilization force” to support security and humanitarian efforts in the territory.

The latest version of the American proposal features strengthened language on Palestinian rights, outlining that reforms within the Palestinian Authority and the rebuilding of Gaza could help create conditions for a “credible path” toward Palestinian self-determination and eventual statehood.

In a joint statement issued Friday, the United States, along with eight other nations, urged the Security Council to “swiftly adopt” the updated draft. A UN diplomat quoted by the Associated Press said the resolution may secure the minimum nine votes required for approval, with Russia and China expected to abstain rather than exercise their veto power.

Meanwhile, Russia has put forward its own alternative draft focused on achieving sustainable peace in Gaza. Moscow maintains that its proposal does not contradict the American initiative but seeks to “modify the United States’ concept” to align more closely with longstanding UN resolutions, particularly those reaffirming the two-state solution as the basis for a lasting settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A crucial UN vote is set for a US-led Gaza peace plan, proposing a transitional council and international force to aid security and humanitarian efforts. The plan emphasizes Palestinian rights and self-determination. Russia presents an alternative draft, aligning with UN resolutions for a two-state solution, while China and Russia may abstain from voting.
