NEW DELHI: At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a car exploded near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday, prompting a large-scale security response and placing India’s capital on high alert.
The blast occurred close to Gate No. 1 of the station, the Delhi Fire Department confirmed, adding that the explosion triggered a fire that damaged three to four nearby vehicles. Firefighting teams swiftly arrived at the scene and contained the blaze.
“Eight of them died before reaching the hospital. Three are seriously injured, and one is in stable condition,” said the Medical Superintendent of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, where the victims were taken.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Teams from the Delhi Police Special Cell, National Security Guard (NSG), and forensic experts have sealed the area and are examining debris to determine whether explosives were involved.
Authorities have sounded a high alert across Delhi, stepping up surveillance at metro stations, transport hubs, and sensitive public locations. Security officials are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area to trace possible links to other incidents.
The blast site’s proximity to the historic Red Fort, a symbol of India’s independence and a high-security zone, has heightened concern among law enforcement agencies.
