NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council’s approval of wide-ranging reforms to the country’s tax structure, describing them as “Next-Generation reforms” aimed at easing the lives of citizens and boosting the economy.

In a post shared on his official social media account, the Prime Minister recalled that he had first announced the intention to pursue such reforms during his Independence Day speech. He said the Union Government had since prepared a detailed proposal for GST rate rationalisation and process simplification, designed to reduce compliance burdens and make living costs more affordable.

Modi noted that the GST Council, comprising both the Union and the States, had collectively agreed to the Union Government’s proposals on rate cuts and reforms. He stressed that these changes would directly benefit farmers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), women, youth, and the middle class.

“The wide-ranging reforms will improve the lives of our citizens and ensure ease of doing business for all, especially small traders and businesses,” the Prime Minister said.

The GST overhaul, which reduces the existing four-tier structure to a simplified two-slab system, is set to be implemented on September 22, 2025.
