LONDON : Speaking alongside Trump at a joint press conference, Starmer underlined that Britain’s move should be viewed through the lens of a long-term roadmap toward peace, not as a gesture linked to the US president’s arrival.
“The timing has nothing to do with President Trump’s visit,” Starmer said. “We completely agree on the need for peace and a roadmap, because the situation in Gaza is unbearable.”
Trump acknowledged a rare point of discord with his British counterpart, saying their disagreement over Palestine was “one of only a few” between them. Despite this, both leaders stressed that they remained aligned on the broader goal of achieving stability in the region.
Starmer emphasized that London’s position goes beyond the immediate crisis, urging serious international action to address the wider conflict. “The situation in Gaza cannot be tolerated,” he said, insisting that recognition of Palestine fits within Britain’s broader effort to push for peace across the Middle East.
