WASHINGTON : The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced that the exemption extension follows the latest trade and economic agreement reached between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, unveiled on November 1. The decision grants an additional one-year waiver on tariffs for dozens of Chinese-made products that were previously set to lose their exemptions on November 29.
According to the USTR, the renewed exemptions cover 14 categories of solar energy product manufacturing equipment and 164 categories of industrial and medical goods. Key items include electric motors, blood-pressure monitoring equipment, pump components, automatic air compressors, and printed circuit boards.
The tariffs, widely known as Section 301 tariffs, were originally imposed by President Trump during his first term over what he described as unfair Chinese intellectual property practices. While the duties remain in place for many Chinese imports, the renewed exemptions reflect an effort to stabilize economic ties as both nations work to prevent further escalation.
