FLORIDA : Speaking ahead of the talks, President Zelenskiy said discussions would focus on the future of the disputed Donbas region, the fate of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and other unresolved political and security concerns.
Zelenskiy told reporters he hopes to revise a US-backed proposal that calls for the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas. He has previously warned that if no compromise is reached, the broader 20-point peace plan, shaped after weeks of negotiations, should be put to a national referendum in Ukraine.
The Florida meeting comes as US-led diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine continue, more than three years after the war began in February 2022. Despite ongoing talks, fighting persists on the ground, with continued air and missile attacks reported by both sides.
President Zelenskiy and Trump convened in Florida to address key disputes in Ukraine's peace plan, including the future of Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Zelenskiy seeks to amend a US-backed proposal for troop withdrawal, hinting at a referendum if talks falter. The meeting is part of continued US-led diplomatic efforts to end the conflict with Russia.
