Venezuela signals reset as diplomatic talks with U.S. begin

Venezuela has formally opened talks with the United States to resume diplomatic relations, marking a dramatic shift in ties days after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

CARACAS : Acting President Delcy Rodríguez’s government announced Friday that it has launched an exploratory diplomatic process with Washington aimed at refocusing and re-establishing diplomatic missions in both capitals. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil said the initiative is intended to rebuild official channels of communication that were severed years ago.

A small team of U.S. diplomats has arrived in Caracas to begin preliminary talks on reopening the U.S. Embassy and assessing conditions for a phased resumption of operations, according to officials briefed on the mission. Venezuelan authorities have also agreed in principle to send a delegation to Washington as part of the process.
