MELBOURNE : Gadecki and Peers staged a spirited comeback to defeat French duo Kristina Mladenovic and Manuel Guinard 4–6, 6–3, 10–8 in a thrilling final played in front of a roaring home crowd.
The opening set saw the French pair assert early control, with frequent breaks of serve setting the tone. However, buoyed by crowd support, the Australians regrouped in the second set to level the contest and force a match tie-break.
Trailing 7–5 midway through the decider, Gadecki and Peers held their nerve in the closing moments, overturning the deficit to seal victory in a rousing finish at Rod Laver Arena.
The triumph marks the first successful mixed doubles title defence since Yana Novotna and Jim Pugh achieved the feat in 1989. For Australian tennis, it is an even rarer milestone, the last all-Australian duo to accomplish a similar achievement were Margaret Court and Ken Fletcher, 62 years ago.
