Google’s YouTube to pay $24 million to settle Trump lawsuit over account suspension

Settlement follows similar deals with Meta and X after Capitol attack ban

WASHINGTON - Google’s YouTube has agreed to pay $24 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump over the suspension of his account in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

The settlement makes YouTube the latest social media platform to resolve legal disputes with Trump. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, reached a $25 million settlement earlier this year, while Elon Musk’s X settled for $10 million.

Trump had accused the platforms of silencing him and violating his free speech rights after they suspended his accounts, citing risks of incitement to violence. The companies argued the bans were consistent with their policies and necessary to prevent further unrest.

Representatives for Trump and YouTube declined to comment on the settlement terms beyond confirming the agreement.
