WASHINGTON : Apple plans to harness Google’s Gemini model — a 1.2 trillion-parameter artificial intelligence system, to power a revamped version of Siri, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. The deal, currently being finalized, will see the iPhone maker rely on Google’s technology as a temporary solution while it continues developing its own AI systems.
The Gemini model’s complexity far exceeds Apple’s current in-house AI tools, marking a significant leap in Siri’s capability. Historically, Siri has lagged behind competitors when handling complex, multi-step requests or integrating with third-party applications.
The collaboration, however, will not introduce Google’s AI search into Apple’s operating systems and remains distinct from earlier talks about embedding Gemini directly into Siri as a chatbot. Both Apple and Google declined to comment on the report.
Earlier this year, Apple announced that its planned AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026, without providing a reason. The company has since undergone a major internal reshuffle, with Mike Rockwell now overseeing Siri development after CEO Tim Cook reportedly lost confidence in former AI chief John Giannandrea.
The move follows rapid advancements by rivals, Google integrated Gemini into its assistant last year, while Amazon launched an AI-powered overhaul of Alexa earlier in 2025.
Apple plans to pay $1 billion each year to incorporate Google's Gemini AI model into Siri, marking a major upgrade. This temporary solution aims to improve Siri's performance as Apple continues to develop its own AI capabilities. The Gemini model's advanced features are expected to address Siri's historical shortcomings in managing complex requests.
