NEW DELHI — India has voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly resolution that reaffirms support for a two-state solution to the Israel–Palestine conflict, joining 142 other countries in backing the measure.
The resolution, introduced by France, was adopted late Thursday with 142 votes in favour, 10 against and 12 abstentions. The United States, Israel, Hungary and Argentina were among those who opposed it.
The text endorses the New York Declaration, a framework unveiled at a high-level conference co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia in July at UN headquarters. It calls for an immediate end to the war in Gaza, the resumption of peace talks, and a comprehensive settlement based on two states living side by side.
The declaration stresses that Gaza must form part of a future Palestinian state and rejects any occupation, siege, annexation or forced displacement. It also demands that Israel halt settlement activities in occupied territories, including East Jerusalem.
By voting in favour, India aligned itself with the majority of the international community pressing for a negotiated, just and lasting solution to the decades-long conflict, while reiterating its support for Palestinian self-determination within a framework of peace and security.
