New York: The emergency session was announced following developments linked to the surprise military action carried out by the United States in Venezuela, which has triggered widespread diplomatic reactions across the globe.
Khadija Ahmed, spokesperson for Somalia’s permanent mission to the United Nations, said the decision was taken by Somalia, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of January. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday morning.
Diplomatic sources said the request for the emergency meeting was initiated by Venezuela and formally conveyed to the Council through Colombia, which currently holds one of the non-permanent seats on the 15-member body.
