Washington: In a memorandum titled Withdrawing the United States from International Organisations, Conventions, and Treaties that are Contrary to the Interests of the United States, President Trump said he had determined that continued membership or support for these organisations was not in the national interest. The decision covers a total of 66 entities, including 31 United Nations bodies and 35 non-UN organisations.
Trump directed all executive departments and federal agencies to take immediate steps to implement the withdrawals as quickly as possible. For United Nations entities, the memorandum states that withdrawal would involve ending US participation and financial contributions to the extent permitted under existing laws.
Among the organisations affected are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the International Solar Alliance, the Science and Technology Centre in Ukraine, and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
