MUMBAI : As gains from deals with nations like the UAE and Australia start to materialise, Indian industry is now eagerly awaiting two major upcoming pacts, with the United States and the European Union.

FICCI President Anant Goenka on Tuesday said India is witnessing a noticeable rise in trade activity stemming from the FTAs signed over the past few years. “FTAs that we have signed, we are seeing positive traction on that front. Good trade pickup after the recent FTAs that have been signed,” he told PTI, stressing that the momentum marks a strong phase for the country’s export landscape.

India has recently implemented trade agreements with Mauritius, the UAE, Australia, and the four-nation bloc EFTA. A similar pact with the United Kingdom has also been signed, though its implementation is still pending. Goenka added that FICCI will focus on helping industries fully leverage these deals to further boost India’s export performance.

Looking ahead, Goenka highlighted that Indian industry is particularly keen on the proposed trade pacts with the US and EU, two of India’s largest trading partners.

He noted the “large complementarity” between India and these economies, describing a mutually beneficial foundation where “we have the people, and they have technology”, creating space for value-addition rather than direct competition.

India and the US are currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement (BTA), with six rounds of talks completed so far. Both sides are aiming to conclude the first tranche of the pact soon, a development that could further accelerate India’s trade growth trajectory.

Summary

Recent FTAs with partners such as the UAE, Australia, and Mauritius are driving positive trade trends for India, says FICCI’s Anant Goenka. With the UK deal pending, attention turns to negotiations with the US and EU, where shared strengths could enhance exports and deepen economic ties through mutually beneficial trade frameworks.
