THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government on Thursday suspended ADGP M R Ajith Kumar following the submission of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report that allegedly linked him to an attempted cover-up in the investigation into the Nava Kerala Sadas assault case.
The suspension came a day after State Police Chief Ravada A Chandrasekhar received the SIT’s final report. The police chief had earlier sought clarifications on certain findings, including statements that allegedly implicated Ajith Kumar, before the SIT submitted its final response.
Based on the report, the Home Minister recommended disciplinary action against the senior police officer. The recommendation was subsequently approved by Chief Minister VD Satheesan, leading to Ajith Kumar’s suspension.
The case stems from an incident on December 15, 2023, during the Nava Kerala Sadas programme in Alappuzha, where KSU and Youth Congress activists protesting against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s convoy were allegedly assaulted by members of the security team.
The SIT was constituted to investigate allegations that the original inquiry had been compromised and that attempts were made to shield those involved. The latest action marks a significant development in the politically sensitive case, with further disciplinary proceedings expected based on the findings of the investigation.
