WASHINGTON : In a post published Monday on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump accused Mexico of withholding critical water supplies owed to the United States under the 1944 water-sharing treaty. The agreement requires Mexico to deliver water from the eastern basin of the Rio Grande in exchange for access to Colorado River water.

Trump alleged that Mexico has fallen short of its commitments for the past five years, accumulating what he described as an outstanding debt of nearly one billion cubic meters of water. He has demanded that roughly a quarter of this volume be released by December 31, with the rest to follow shortly after.

“So far, Mexico is not responding, which is very unfair to our U.S. farmers who deserve this much-needed water,” Trump wrote. He added that he has “authorized the preparation of documents” to trigger a 5% tariff on Mexican imports if the water is not released immediately.
