NEW DELHI : Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman on Thursday, congratulating him on his party’s “remarkable victory” in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
Rahman is widely expected to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister after his party secured a landslide majority in the polls, according to provisional results.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi said he conveyed his “best wishes and support” to Rahman in his efforts to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.
“As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples,” Modi said.
The conversation signals New Delhi’s readiness to work with the incoming administration in Dhaka, underscoring the strategic and economic importance of India–Bangladesh ties in South Asia.
