MADRID : In a televised address on Wednesday, Sánchez criticised the military strikes on Iran and cautioned against the growing tensions in the Middle East. He warned that conflicts of this scale can quickly spiral into humanitarian disasters.

“This is how the great disasters of humanity begin… the fates of millions cannot be toyed with,” Sánchez said, emphasising that global problems cannot be resolved through bombs and military confrontation.

The dispute between the two NATO allies intensified after Sánchez described the US and Israeli bombing of Iran as “reckless and illegal.” In response, Spain announced a ban on US aircraft using its naval and air bases in southern Spain to launch attacks on Tehran.

Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s position with a clear message: “No to war.” He said the Spanish government’s stance is rooted in its principles and national interests, stressing that Spain would not be complicit in actions that harm global stability or contradict its values.

The Spanish leader also pointed to the long-term consequences of previous conflicts in the region. Citing the aftermath of the Iraq war, Sánchez noted that military interventions often trigger indirect effects such as the rise of terrorism and increased energy prices.
