ZURICH : FIFA’s decision follows the successful pilot edition of the FIFA Series held in March 2024, which laid the groundwork for a more ambitious and inclusive format next year. The “FIFA 2026” Series will welcome a significantly larger number of national associations, expand to more host countries, and, making history, introduce a dedicated edition for women’s national teams for the first time.

Designed to provide valuable international exposure, the Series aims to support technical development, boost competitive balance, and create more pathways for countries that seldom face opponents outside their regions. FIFA says the expanded format aligns directly with its Strategic Objectives 2023–2027, which emphasize leveling the playing field globally and encouraging knowledge-sharing between football cultures.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino highlighted the initiative’s wider mission, saying: “Through this series, we aim to provide an opportunity for development for players, coaches, and fans, while simultaneously promoting the global dimension and inclusive nature of football through valuable matches. The 2026 edition will help to enhance this impact for both players.”

On the men’s side, friendly matches will be hosted across a diverse lineup of nations, including Australia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, and Uzbekistan. FIFA also revealed that discussions are ongoing with additional member associations that may join the host list in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the inaugural FIFA Women’s Series will debut in Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Thailand, with the full roster of host nations and participating teams scheduled for announcement in early 2026.

The FIFA Council had approved the launch of the FIFA Series back in December 2022, greenlighting a system designed to help emerging football nations experience competition under conditions similar to major tournaments.

Summary

In a historic move, FIFA's 2026 Series will feature a women's edition and expand to more host countries, following a successful pilot in 2024. The initiative seeks to boost international exposure and competitive balance, supporting FIFA's strategic objectives. Men's matches will occur in various nations, while the women's series will debut in Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Thailand.
