SEOUL : The project, backed by massive international investment, includes the construction of large-scale and even floating AI data centers in South Korea and beyond.
The agreement positions Samsung as a key supplier of high-performance DRAM and advanced logic chips, with demand projected at up to 900,000 wafers per month to power OpenAI’s next-generation models. SK Hynix will complement the effort with its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) solutions, crucial for training large AI systems.
Samsung’s subsidiaries, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries, will also play a critical role, particularly in developing floating data centers that promise lower cooling costs, reduced carbon emissions, and an answer to land scarcity challenges.
The Stargate partnership underscores South Korea’s bid to secure a “top-three” global AI power status, tapping its technological expertise to fuel both economic growth and international influence. It also comes as Nvidia commits $100 billion to supplying chips for OpenAI’s infrastructure, with U.S. government backing adding further momentum.
